Rings That Never Were
A selection of rings that never actually existed extracted from the first edition of Dove's Guide (1950) for a bit of fun!
Adstone, Northants, All Saints, 5, 16 cwt.
I am not sure why this entry appeared, as it does not seem to misrepresent anywhere I can think of.
Astley, Ches, S. Mary, 6, 13¼ cwt.
This picture is actually of Astley in neighbouring Shropshire which is dedicated to St Mary and only has 2 bells.
Bristol, Glos, S. Luke, Barton Hill, 6, 14 cwt.
This is a typo for St Luke, Bedminster (now demolished, bells at Southville.) Barton Hill has only ever had 1 bell (stolen and since replaced.)
Bristol, Glos, S. Matthew Moorfields, 8, 18 cwt.
Presumably a typo for St Matthew, Kingsdown, which also happens to appear under Clifton. There were and still may be 2 bells here.
Cotham, Glos S. Nathaniel, 8, 22 cwt.
Another typo for St Matthew, Kingsdown. This former church only ever had 1 bell which is now in Swindon.
Dinas Powis, Glam, S. Peter, 5, 14 cwt.
This should be the neighbouring church of St Andrews Major.
Holcot, Northants, S. Mary & All Saints, 6, 14 cwt.
There is a chime of 4, 12-1-17 in G here, which were a ring of 3, 6 cwt in C prior to 1899.
Kearsley Moor, Lancs, S. Stephen, 6, 9 cwt.
Only 1 bell, 7 cwt in B inscribed J. BAILEY & CO. ALBION WORKS SALFORD 1871.
Llanarth, Cardigan, S. David, 6, 14 cwt.
Clearly a typo for Llanarth, Monmouthshire. There is a chime of 3, 6 cwt by Thomas Rudhall 1776 here.
Pontypool, Mon, S. James, 6, 11 cwt.
Another mystery like Adstone.
Stoke, Kent, SS. Peter & Paul, 6, 13 cwt.
Apparently a typo for Stone-in-Oxney according to the 1951 Dove errata sheet. There is a chime of 3 here which were hung for ringing until 1992.
Vanclause, Sydney, S. Michael, 8, 7½ cwt.
A total mystery... This is St Michael's Anglican church, Vaucluse, Sydney. Does it have bells I wonder like a Gillett chime perhaps?
